[Imported] "Custom options" What are they?

On the importing / updating products it says the following.
Append Complex Data
You should only use append when updating information. If you are only changing Custom Options you can use Replace Existing Complex Data as Append would add duplicate custom options.

Are the "Custom Options" custom attributes I have created or something else?

  Custom Options is the old name for product "Customizations".
