Allow special character in the URL key - Bring it Back!
AnsweredHi there,
Recently, you did some changes to the URL keys - removed all accented vowels which will lead to SEO issues for some languages.
cld-y-pls-brng-bck-th-spcl-chrctrs-n-th-RL-kys ?
Just imagine those missing letters were accented vowels.
Probably you can read it, but do you think Google can too for SEO purposes?
In my opinion, it’s really important to have this feature back for those languages who do have accented vowels, e.g. French.
The - é - should be substitute by - e - and not be ignored in order to have SEO-Friendly URL keys otherwise the keywords in it will have no meaning to Google at all and/or lead to wrong ones.
Thanks.
Kind regards,
Sandra

Hi Sandra,
You can try this:
- Products>Settings>Catalog Settings>“Restrict special chars in product url keys”
- change to NO
But this will allow ALL special characters which could break your URL if not set properly when creating new products.

Hi Eric,
Thank you for bringing it back! Just tried it out and the URL Key doesn't look like it should.
Here's just an example:
Name is: Penderie à roulettes avec 10 bras inclinés et barre intermédiaire
URL key gets: penderie-%c3%a0-roulettes-avec-10-bras-inclin%c3%a9s-et-barre-interm%c3%a9diaire
instead of: penderie-a-roulettes-avec-10-bras-inclines-et-barre-intermediaire
Attached the French Accented vowels - last column.
Kind regards,
Sandra
