Configurable Products are one of the most useful tools your store creates and you will want to familiarize yourself with the creation tutorial especially if you are selling items with multiple choices such as size, color, even flavor!
Here are some of the most common issues people run into with these products and how to fix them:
- Is your attribute set up correctly and completely?
- Scope must be set to Global
- Catalog Input Type must be Dropdown
- Unique Value must be No
- Use to Create Configurable Product must be Yes
- All the Options you wish to use and for customers to see on the product's choices must be entered
- Is your Configurable Product In Stock?
Check this from the Inventory section of Product Information - Are Products Associated?
If you have not yet created the associated products that will populate the drop down, do so from Associated Products.
If you have already created them but they are not linked, go to Associated Products' Super product attributes configuration to search for products that match the specifications of your Configurable Product. Enable and Reset filters to ensure you have all your options available. use the check boxes to select the products you need and save.
If the simple products you built are still not there they may be missing information such as only having size or only color but not both. - Do the simple associated Products have inventory and are In Stock?
You can check this on each individual product from the Product List or by clicking Edit next to the variation in associated products. - Are the simple associated Products correctly applied to the website & Categories?
Especially if you have multiple store views, make sure that the simple products are attached to the website. There are two ways to do this, in the product itself under "Website" or you can push the change using Actions.
You may want to also make sure the simple products are attached to the same category as the configurable product. Although the products are not seen, this will allow them to be used with promotions that are on a category basis.
